David MacDonald named to DOC portfolio


The Department of Communications' new Minister, David MacDonald, was named to the Cabinet by Prime Minister Joe Clark on June 4, 1979. In addition to Minister of Communications, Mr. McDonald is also Secretary of State, Minister responsible for Status of Women programs and a member of the inner Cabinet.


A native of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Mr. MacDonald was ordained in June 1961 as a Minister of the United Church of Canada. As a student, he was involved in radio and also worked for the CBC in Halifax.


The Minister, who represented the P.E.I. constituency of Prince from 1965-1968, has been the Member of Parliament for Egmont since 1968.


He has served on numerous House of Commons committees; been active in human rights issues and has written on the Nigerian civil war, human rights in Latin America, and on Canada's War Measures Act.


Mr. MacDonald is an avid jogger and amateur photographer. He enjoys sailing and cycling and is a devotee of vintage NFB films.
