Charlie Fisher began his career after obtaining a second class radio operator's ticket from Sprott-Shaw Radio School in Vancouver. Charlie went to work for the Department of Transport on November 6, 1942.

He was first a radio operator at Fort St. John. British Columbia for two years, followed by three years in Calgary and six years in Yellowknife. He spent three years in Saskatoon, working as an instrument landing system technician. He then went to Transport's regional office in Winnipeg as a travelling technician.

In 1958 Charlie moved over to the radio regulations section and two years later went to Brandon as officerin-charge of the district there, for another four years. In 1964, the Fishers returned to Winnipeg.
