THE TRANSATLANTIC NEWSPAPER RADIO STATION

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA

Photo of the Transatlantic Newspaper Radio Station at Halifax, Nova Scotia, as it looked under construction in 1922.

J.A. Burch, Engineer, and F.E. Meinholtz, Chief Radio Operator, New York Times, are seated left to right.

This station was maintained by a syndicate of about nine of the largest newspapers in the United States purely to receive press messages from foreign countries. The messages were then forwarded to the supporting newspapers by the usual landline methods. Little transmitting was done from the site except to acknowledge receipt of incoming messages and to get corrections. A power of about 10 KW was employed.
